Driving licences for Microcars

VARANEO Microcars 45 km/h

Our VARANEO microcars with a maximum speed of 45 km/h may be driven with the driving licence class AM already from 16 years onward. In the federal states Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg even starting at 15 years. The driving licence class AM is included in the driving licence classes B (passenger car), T (tractor) and A1/A2 (motorcycle). In addition, all previously issued two-wheeler driving licenses entitle to drive our microcars with a maximum speed of 45 km/h

VARANEO Microcars 80 km/h

In order to drive our microcars with a maximum speed of 80 km/h, a class B driving licence is required.

Approval, MOT and registration number

Our e-microcars differ in terms of approval, main inspection and registration. For the 45 km/h variants, different rules apply than for our 80 km/h vehicles.

45 km/h variant

For our electric Micro-Cars (EG-Klase L6e) with a maximum speed of 45 km/h, only an insurance number plate ("moped number plate") is required. The insurance license plates can be purchased at numerous insurance companies or online, and are valid for one year (from March to March). The colors of the insurance license plates change every year to enable the police to recognize from a distance whether a vehicle has the necessary insurance coverage. The costs for the insurance license plate vary and include either only the liability insurance or additional partial coverage. Some providers also offer a special "electric hull" for e-bikes, pedelecs or electric mini cars such as our e-microcars.

Driving without a valid insurance number plate is a criminal offence and can be punished with imprisonment for up to one year or be fined according to §6 of the compulsory insurance law.

For our 45-km/h variant there is no motor vehicle tax. Likewise no main inspection ("HU", "MOT") is necessary.

80-km/h variant

Our E-Microcars with a maximum speed of 80 km/h (EC class 7e) are registered like a normal passenger car. The vehicle tax for electric vehicles between 18.05.2011 and 31.12.2020 is non-applicable for ten years from the date of registration. The tax amount will then be calculated on the basis of the permissible total weight. Thus, even after the first ten tax-free years, only a very small tax amount is required for our VARANEO E-Microcars.

The main inspection (colloquially "the MOT") for Micocars with a maximum speed of 80 km/h is due every 24 months.

The costs of the insurance vary strongly depending upon offerer. However, there are often discounted rates for the vehicle class L7e.

Range of your E-Microcars

VARANEO Microcars 45-km/h

Thanks to the gel batteries with a capacity of 1440 watt hours, a maximum range of 140 kilometers is possible. The actual range depends on numerous factors, such as maximum speed, driving behaviour, payload, route profile and outside temperatures.

Thanks to the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1200 watt hours, a maximum range of 110 kilometres is possible. The actual range depends on numerous factors, such as maximum speed, driving behaviour, payload, route profile and outside temperatures.

Charging your E-Microcar

In principle, each of our vehicles comes with a charging cable with a Schuko plug on the house side, which fits into any normal socket.
This means that you can charge your Varaneo at any 230 volt socket.
A complete charging process takes about 6 - 8 hours.

If you are planning to travel a longer distance which will require charging or intermediate charging, or if you don't have the possibility to charge your Varaneo at home, there are now many possibilities to use publicly accessible charging stations.

You can get a good overview e.g. on the website https://ladeatlas.elektromobilitaet-bayern.de

This page contains a non-commercial offer for the drivers of electric cars and is funded by the Bavarian State Government.
In principle, this map works for the whole of Germany, partly even for neighbouring European countries.

There is in the meantime a very broad offer with diverse tarifs for the charging of e-cars. With some providers the pure loading current is computed, with others e.g. the loading time, which depends on the loading station. Some require a membership in order to be able to bill; with others you can also charge spontaneously without registration and pay e.g. with the mobile phone or credit card data.

We recommend to all our "Varaneros" to inform themselves thoroughly in advance and to compare their options, in order to avoid high loading costs.
